Diabetes Mellitus, especially the Type II variety is rapidly emerging as the No.1 health risk in many parts of the world especially in the UAE. The prevalence of this condition according to recent studies is around 20%. This is a condition, which is equally common among UAE nationals and expatriates.

Besides this the average age for developing this disease is also decreasing fast. It is not uncommon to see youngsters in their 20s developing this disease.

The increased prevalence may be attributed to two factors:
1. Genetic
2. Environmental - sedentary life style, poor choice of food (like fast foods) etc.

NMC Hospital, Abu Dhabi, the leading private sector hospital in the capital established an Endocrinology Department, the first of its kind in the country in the year 1994. Growing by leaps and bounds within a decade reflecting the exponential growth of the hospital, it is now offering a Comprehensive Diabetic Plan. The department is staffed by two fully qualified Endocrinologists, Diabetic Nurse and is equipped with state-of-the-art innovations like Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS). It will soon be offering Insulin Pump Services.

Diabetes Mellitus is now considered a multi-system disease involving almost all organs in the body. It is an important cause for stroke, ischemic heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. Hence a team approach is required to treat this disease and also to assess its effects on the body.

With this noble aim, NMC Hospital is now offering the Comprehensive Diabetic Plan. This is a daylong programme, which will involve lab tests like Blood Sugar, Glycosylated Haemoglobin, and Urine for Micro Albuminuria and Lipid Profile.

This will be followed by consultation with a Dietician, eye check-up by an Ophthalmologist, with provision for fundal photographs for full authentication, ECG and Doppler test to assess blood flow to the feet. The tests will be performed by a Radiologist with the most sophisticated equipment at the Radiology Department.

To evaluate the possibility of Diabetic Foot, we are also offering Foot Pressure Monitor, which is a first of its kind in the country. The results of all these tests will be available the same evening and it will be studied by the Endocrinologist to offer appropriate treatment and advice.
