Homeopathy
In 1796, a German Doctor, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann discovered a different approach to the cure
of the sick, which he called Homeopathy (from the Greek words meaning 'similar
suffering'). Like Hippocrates two thousand years earlier, he realized that there were two
ways of treating ill health, the way of "opposites" and the way of
"similars". It works on the principle that 'like treats like'. An illness is
treated with a medicine, which could produce similar symptoms in a healthy person.
Homeopathy as a therapeutic system has been used for over 200 years. It is an effective
and scientific system of healing that assists the natural tendency of the body to heal
itself. It recognizes that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within
the whole person and that it is the patient who needs treatment not the disease. The medicines are prepared from plant extracts, animal products,
snake venoms, and minerals. The active ingredients are given in a highly dilute form to
avoid toxicity, which means that homeopathic remedies are extremely safe. They do not
cause side effects and does not cause addiction. This is because only a very minute amount
of the active ingredient is used in a specially prepared form.
Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body's own
healing power. This stimulus will assist the system to clear itself of any expressions of
imbalance.
In order to find the right remedy for an individual, the
homeopath needs to know all about the patient. A detailed understanding of the person at
an emotional, intellectual and constitutional level, along with physical complaints and
details is needed to assess the case correctly. Details about the general energy level,
medical history, family history, profession, etc are also important.
Scope of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is successful in treating a wide range of
conditions often faced in general medicine. In modern practice homeopathy and conventional
medicine are not in conflict but complementary; in most instances they may be used
together. Because homeopathy encourages the body's own natural healing responses, rather
than treating symptoms alone, practitioners have found that it offers a stimulating and
rewarding approach to patient care.
The use of homeopathy to treat the constitutional
symptoms of glandular disorders like hypo/hyperthyroidism, side effects of chemotherapy
and radiotherapy in cancer patients are a couple of examples of its application along side
conventional medicine. Homeopathy has particular value in the management of chronic
conditions that do not respond well to conventional treatments. What homeopathy can treat
cannot be completely listed, however, a few disease conditions commonly met with and
easily amenable to homeopathy are:
Childhood problems:
· Delayed milestones
· Teething troubles
· Worms infestations
· Nocturnal enuresis
· Recurrent tonsillitis
· Bad effects of repeated vaccinations
· Temper tantrums
· Bed wetting
· Repeated respiratory infections
Gynaecological disorders
· Menstrual complaints
· Menopausal problems
· PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease)
General conditions
· Allergies
· Repeated upper respiratory tract infections
· Eczema, dermatitis, acne, warts, corns
· Bad effects of injuries - sprains
· Gastro intestinal upsets - dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, hyperacidity,
constipation &
diarrhea
· Renal calculi (Kidney stones)
· Gout, arthritis, symptoms of osteoporosis
In contrast to conventional medicinal treatment, homeopathy offers a different approach to
the concept of illness and its relationship to the patient.
A homeopathic medical practitioner recognizes the importance of diagnosing disease in
conventional terms and works by using history, examination and investigations. However,
the practitioner will focus on the patient's unique expression of their illness through
particular signs and symptoms. In addition, the patient's personality, temperament,
genetic markers and a strong family history of particular diseases play an important part
in selecting a homeopathic remedy.
Appropriate judgment is the key to success and it guides the practitioner to selecting the
right form of treatment whether conventional, homeopathic or a combination of both.
