NMC hospital
has entered into a strategic partnership with Germany's prestigious
Universitats Freiburg Klinikum (UHF) to offer advanced medical
treatment facilities for UAE residents. Under the terms of
the agreement, patients at NMC requiring further treatment
can avail of UHF's facilities.
Set
in a pastoral university town of 250,000 inhabitants and 30,000
students, UHF lies in close proximity to the verdant Black
Forest and the Rhine valley in southwest Germany.
The hospital, founded in 1457, is the second biggest in Germany
with 2,000 beds and a staff of 8,000 including 990 doctors.
There are 13 clinics, five institutes and five central services
such as the Hospital Chemist and the Tumour Centre. The UHF
hospital has 35 super specialty departments with a faculty
comprising the cream of international medical practitioners.
UHF
is at the extreme vanguard in the evolving science of biotechnology.
Scientists at UHF can develop skin and cartilage from body
tissues by isolating cells from the body tissue, passing them
through a special matrix over a two-week period and transplanting
them on the needed portion of the body. This process ensures
full acceptance as both the donor and recipient are the same.
In time, the scientists believe that entire organs can be
transplanted. In a pioneering operation at UHF, a new ear
was transplanted to replace the damaged one, using the patient's
own cells.
The
agreement between NMC and UHF, which came into effect from
October 1, 2001, also covers the provision of advanced training
through exchange of doctors, other medical and paramedical
auxiliary personnel between two faculties. Future cooperation
between the two will lay special emphasis on the options and
opportunities offered by telemedicine. They will also jointly
tap new emerging fields in the healthcare industry. NMC will
also apprise UHF of the unfolding developments in UAE's healthcare
sector. On its part, UHF will keep NMC informed on medical
development and new treatment methods.
The
hospital has also tied up with The London Clinic, London,
Universitats Spital Zurich, Switzerland and other leading
hospitals in Europe and USA, where its patients can avail
advanced treatment.
