Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry offers a wide range of services at out patient clinics and
in-patient units for adults, adolescents and children. Every problem related to mental
health is treated here, including:
· Major psychiatric problems like schizophrenia, mood disorders
(depression)
· Minor psychiatric problems like anxiety, phobia,
panic, adjustment, eating disorders and Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder
· Psychosexual dysfunctions
· Emotional disturbances, conduct disorders in
children,mental retardation and other developmental
disorders
· Student counselling
· Motivational courses and programmes |

The Department also runs
several sub-specialty services that cater to the needs of the large multiethnic community.
General Psychiatric Clinics
A wide range of psychiatric disorders are treated by employing a broad based eclectic
approach with therapies tailored to the needs of individual patients.
The laboratory and radio -imaging departments facilitate the accurate diagnosis of
neuropsychiatric, psychophysiologic and geriatric disorders. Therapeutic drug monitoring
further enables the use of the latest biological methods of treatment for psychiatric
disorders.
Psychotherapeutic Services
A variety of therapeutic approaches are employed to assist patients - short term
psychodynamic therapy, behaviour modification therapies, cognitive behaviour therapy and
relaxation therapies including yoga techniques. All stress related conditions,
psychosomatic disorders, substance abuse and dependence problems, marital disharmony,
depression, anxiety, chronic pain syndromes and psychological problems associated with
chronic physical illness are effectively managed in this clinic, often without any
adjuvant medications.
Child and Family Psychiatry
These services are run by a senior consultant with twenty years of experience in child and
adolescent psychiatry. Assessment and management of neurodevelopmental problems, emotional
and behavioural problems of childhood, speech and language disorders and physical
disorders such as bedwetting, soiling, non-organic pain in abdomen and headache, school
refusal, over-activity, attention and concentration problems of slow learners, scholastic
backwardness and specific learning disabilities are routinely available. Specific
psychological tests for children, individual therapy for children, parental counselling,
training in parenting skills and home based programs for management of several
behavioural, emotional and developmental disorders including autism spectrum disorders are
provided. Children with general and specific developmental delays receive comprehensive
assessment, developmental counselling and remediation.
Services for Adolescents
A large number of adolescents with special needs are being seen in the services for
adolescents run by the department. Individual therapy for adolescent adjustment problems
or persisting emotional disturbance in adolescence, problems with academic and goal
orientation, relationships problems and adolescent conflicts, behaviour dyscontrol and
impulsivity, are being applied with success. In addition, psychological testing and
educational career guidance are offered for adolescents.
Acute Psychiatry and In-patient service
Offers emergency psychiatric evaluation and treatment including crisis intervention and
crisis resolution to individuals experiencing an episode of psychiatric illness or trauma.
The in-patient division utilizes focal treatment planning to address the individual's need
for hospitalization. Active discharge planning provides carefully organized transition
from hospital to community reintegration.
