Radiology
Open round the clock, this department is managed by a
team of experienced Radiologists and Radiographers headed
by a senior consultant. They are supported by state of
the art imaging modalities for quick and accurate diagnosis.
Imaging
modalities cover the most crucial medical procedures
including:
· Conventional X-ray units with CR system
· Multi Probe Ultrasound Scanners
· Mammography
· Multi -Slice Spiral Computerized Tomography (CT SCAN)
· Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
· Bone Densitometer (DEXA)
· OPG (Panoramic X-ray), Cephalometry and Dental X-rays. |

Conventional X- Ray Units with CR System
Using the latest Philips CR System and Kodak CR System, conventional X-rays are now digitized and printed on
dry films without chemical processing. One of the biggest advantages of the CR System is
the ease with which archiving and networking of X-ray images is made possible - thanks to
its digital imaging capabilities.
X -Ray Units
· Siemens Sireskop CX Unit with Image Intensifier and television monitor.
· C.G.R. 750 mA X-ray unit.
· Mobile X-ray unit for Ward and Operation Theatre radiography.
· Mobile I.I. Fluoroscopy for Operation Theatre.
· Portable 50 mA unit for house visits and on-site X-ray examinations. . TREX 500ma unit.
Apart
from routine X-rays, special procedures include:
· Barium swallow, meal and enemas (Double Contrast)
· Enteroclysis or small bowel enema
· Excretory urogram / I.V.P.
· Cysto-urethrogram
· Hystero-salpingogram (HSG)
· Parotid Sialography
· Myelogram
Multi Probe Ultrasound
Scanners
An Ultrasound scan is the initial imaging method of choice
in the investigation of a variety of pathologies. The hospital
has two high-end ATL/HDI 5000 Colour Doppler Ultrasound units.
They are advanced, high resolution ultrasound systems with
multiple probes and colour flow mapping (Doppler) capabilities.
The ultrasound studies undertaken in the department include:
· Routine abdomino- pelvic sonography
· Obstetric and Gynaecological scans
· Small parts scanning for thyroid, testis, breasts, etc
· Neurosonography
· Colour Doppler studies
· Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
· Carotid artery studies
· Peripheral arterial studies
· Penile artery studies for impotency
· Varicocele, etc.
· Trans -vaginal sonography for pelvic scanning and ovulation
studies
· Trans-rectal sonography for prostate etc
Mammography
This is an excellent imaging modality by which the soft tissue
details of the breasts are evaluated with minimal radiation.
It is an ideal technique for screening for breast cancer,
which may be picked up at a very early stage, even before
the patient has developed complaints or symptoms. It is performed
as a routine screening procedure for patients in the age group
of 40 years and above, when the incidence of breast cancer
is more. Lumps of the breasts, nipple discharges, post mastectomy
patients and cancer phobia are some of the indications of
Mammography.
The
hospital uses a sophisticated GE Senographe mammography unit.
Multi-Slice Spiral Computerized Tomography (CT SCAN)
A state of the art Philips Mx8000 Dual Slice CT Scanner has been recently added to the
existing diagnostic set-up. This high end equipment performs advanced continuous-rotation tomographic scans.
With the latest software it enables quick reconstruction of all images and provides
multi-planar reformatting, 3&4d image reconstruction, virtual endoscopy, angiography
among other advanced applications like, perfusion imaging of brain in early stroke
patients.
Further, CT scan is
excellent for imaging the Head, Temporal bones, Orbits, Thorax, Abdomen and Pelvis, Spine
and Bony structures. With spiral multi-slice technology the scan time is phenomenally
reduced which is a great advantage in paediatric and trauma patients. A single breath-hold
scan will be able to cover the entire chest and abdomen. |

Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging helps obtain clear sectional images of the human body and in
the process helps make diagnosis of abnormalities easy. Most importantly, it clearly
differentiates between healthy and diseased tissue and does not expose the body to the
harmful effects of X-rays. The latest Philips Gyroscan Intera is an MRI system that brings
an entirely new level of magnetic resonance functionality and efficiency, helping both
easier diagnosis and patient comfort. |

Advantages over other modalities
· Unlike CT Scans or Isotope Scans, MRI does not use any ionizing
radiation for image generation.
· The image resolution is far superior to that of other imaging
modalities like ultrasound and
CT Scan.
. MRI can give sectional images in all orthogonal planes,
without changing the patient's position.
However, the indications for each method of scanning
are different. One type of scan cannot replace
the other as they are mutually complimentary.
Bone Densitometry
Osteoporosis
is a degenerative disease that results in severe bone loss
thereby greatly increasing the chances of a fracture.
The
'Bone Densitometer' is a sophisticated equipment that enables
doctors to detect and treat bone loss at an early stage itself.
It measures the bone mineral density safely, accurately and
painlessly. At the NMC Hospital, one can avail
of the Dexa Bone Densitometer, which is the 'Gold Standard'
in detecting osteoporosis. NMC has a fan-beam Densitometer,
which enables each scan in a matter of seconds.
The
risk factors indicating diagnostic use of Bone Densitometry:
· Oestrogen deficiency - premature menopause (< 45 years)
/ Prolonged secondary Amenorrhoea
(>1 year)
· Corticosteroid therapy
· Maternal family history of hip fracture
· Low body mass index (< 19 kg/m2)
· Radiographic evidence of Osteoporosis and/or vertebral deformity
· Previous fragility fracture, particularly of the hip/spine.
· Loss of height, thoracic kyphosis
OPG (Panoramic X-ray), Cephalometry
and Dental X-rays
The Orthopantomography (OPG) machine screens panoramic views
of the teeth, jaws and sinuses. It has special features to
X-ray portions of the jaw, in order to reduce the radiation
dose to patients, particularly children. The machine also
provides excellent pictures of the face and underlying bone,
which is of great help for Plastic and Reconstruction surgery.
