OPEN HEART SURGERY
The first beating heart (off pump) triple vessel bypass surgery was performed at the NMC Specialty Hospital, Dubai by a team of doctors led by Cardiac Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Girish Chandra Varma. This is the first such operation at the newly opened NMC Specialty Hospital in the Open Heart Surgery field.
Patient was diabetic, hypertensive with critical blocks in all the main coronary arteries. On 29th May 2005 the operation started at 10 AM in the morning and all the 3 critical blocks were bypassed. This operation was performed beating heart by using an OCTOPUS STABILIZER. The patient has made an uneventful post operative recovery and is shifted to the Ward.
THE SILENT KILLER - (Angioplasty Report)
A tragic event can kill a diabetic patient without a warning. The presence of Diabetes not only increases the risk of coronary artery disease ( Heart Attack) by 4-6 times, a third of them won’t feel any typical symptoms of the heart attack (chest pain, breathlessness or sweating etc.) or they may have misleading atypical presentations.
This is what we call “A Silent Killer”.

We received such a 72 year old gentleman at our Emergency Room with complain of recurrent vomiting for few hours. He was seen in some other hospital, treated as gastritis and sent home. This could have been disastrous, but the patient sustained the ailment till he landed in our Accident and Emergency room.
Suspecting that the patient may have more than what met the eye, the ER physician ordered for an ECG which showed the very early changes but were counseled about the gravity of the situation and a decision was taken to take the patient urgently to the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
The coronary angiogram revealed a critical 95-99% block in the main artery (LAD) supplying the heart which was responsible for his heart attack. In addition, he had blocks in his other arteries as well due to his underlying diabetic status.
It was decided to tackle the “culprit” artery immediately with balloon angioplasty and stenting so as to prevent the imminent risk of a major heart attack. This procedure is known as a primary Angioplasty and is now the treatment of choice in most of the reputed hospitals in the world with excellent long term results.
After dilatation of the block with a medical balloon, a special drug eluting stent was implanted in the LAD. The block was completely removed and complete blood flow was restored to the heart muscle supplied by the LAD.
The patient made a quick and uneventful recovery and was transferred out of the ICCU within 48 hours in a stable condition with minimal damage to his heart. Angioplasty and stenting to the other three blocks were performed after 72 hours with excellent results.
